Everyone loves a Halloween treat so Education First’s literacy group wants children in the Highlands to visit their table during Hometown Halloween Saturday, October 31st, from 10 am until 1 pm. Main Street in Covington will be filled with fairies, princesses, heroes, animals, and monsters collecting candy, who can delight in receiving a free book as a treat. There will also be an opportunity to sign up for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library book gifting program. Look for the “Education First: Literacy in the Highlands” banner.
The fun books being given as treats will be interesting especially to ages one-month through 12 years. Dianne Garcia, Education Consultant to The Alleghany Foundation and Education First, said, “Our literacy group believes this event will be a wonderful way to reach many of our area children with a special treat to enjoy long after Halloween candy is gone.”
The Halloween book treat is sponsored by the Education First “Literacy in the Highlands” group. The goals of “Education First: Literacy in the Highlands” are: 1. To build a community that reads by merging the community with educators to promote literacy. 2. To build an understanding that reading connects us to the world and build classrooms that inspire students to become lifelong learners/readers beyond school.
Jessica Fauber, Covington City Public Schools Literacy Division and Reading Coach said, “The value of reading books to a small child through elementary school has far more benefits than parents may know. Listening to books at an early age can build their vocabularies, help with their reading comprehension, and even be the reason for their success on SAT scores in high school. And truly just the act of spending that quality time with your child will instill a love of literature and reading.” Lisa Booth, Reading Coach for Alleghany County Public Schools, said, “To succeed in school, students need to be strong readers. The best way to become a strong reader is to practice reading, just like the best way to become a better basketball player is to practice playing basketball. It’s important that students read every day at school and at home.”
